Planning Your Perfect Elopement at Ecola State Park

Nestled along Oregon’s breathtaking coast, Ecola State Park is a dream for couples seeking a secluded and scenic spot to say “I do.” With its dramatic cliffs, expansive ocean views, and lush old-growth forests, Ecola offers everything needed for an intimate, adventure-filled elopement. I’ve been lucky enough to capture love stories here, and I’m excited to share my firsthand knowledge to help you plan your unforgettable day!.

Why Choose Ecola State Park for Your Elopement?

Ecola State Park’s mix of stunning coastline and quiet beach coves makes it ideal for couples looking for a unique, natural backdrop. Just three miles north of Cannon Beach, it’s an easy drive yet feels worlds away. With peaceful spots like Indian Beach and Crescent Beach Overlook, Ecola gives you the perfect balance of privacy and grandeur, with views that go on forever.

Essential Permits and Permissions

Permits and Permissions for Eloping in Ecola State Park

Planning your elopement at Ecola requires a little preparation, especially around permits. Here’s what you need to know:

Permit Requirements:

Oregon State Parks typically require a special-use permit for small weddings and elopements, even with minimal guests. You can get this directly from the parks website, or you can contact the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD), just make sure you do this well in advance to confirm and secure your permit.

Group Size:

Small ceremonies are welcome, but certain areas, like Indian Beach, may have restrictions on group size to protect the landscape. Smaller gatherings are also easier to accommodate within the park’s natural layout.

Photography Permissions:

Photography is allowed, but drone usage can be restricted, especially if it affects local wildlife. If you’d like aerial shots, be sure to check with OPRD and ensure you’re operating within park guidelines. So if your vision involves drone usage, you can easily go to Cannon Beach about 10 minutes away to get those shots rather than using the park.

The Best Elopement Spots in Ecola State Park

Here are some of my favorite places to capture love in this beautiful park:

Indian Beach

With its quiet sands, impressive rock formations, and a short 0.25-mile hike from the Indian Beach parking lot, Indian Beach is perfect for a serene and intimate ceremony. The surrounding cliffs and tide pools create amazing backdrops. Parking here is limited, so plan to arrive early—especially during summer or weekends. P.S., The hike from Ecola Point (the main overlook area) to Indian Beach is about 1.5 miles one way along the Clatsop Loop Trail. This scenic trail winds through coastal forest with some moderate elevation changes and offers gorgeous views along the way. The hike typically takes about 30–45 minutes each way, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.

This trail can be muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea if you plan to walk between these two spots for photos or exploring!

Crescent Beach Overlook

For sweeping ocean views, the Crescent Beach Overlook is accessible by a 1.5-mile trail that takes you through forested areas to a stunning coastal viewpoint. This is an amazing spot for sunrise or sunset ceremonies, capturing the golden light against the water.

Old-Growth Forest Trails

If you love the idea of exchanging vows among towering trees, Ecola’s forest trails offer a secluded spot to do just that. Surrounded by lush greenery, it’s a magical setting for intimate photos and moments. This trail is about 2.5 miles round-trip and is part of the larger Clatsop Loop Trail. This trail offers a gentle yet scenic walk through dense, towering trees and lush undergrowth, and typically takes around 1–1.5 hours to complete at a leisurely pace.

It's a wonderful spot for couples who want a serene, wooded setting as part of their elopement experience. Just note that, like other trails in Ecola, it can be a bit muddy after rain, especially in the spring and fall!

Logistics: Getting to and Around Ecola State Park

Proximity to Cannon Beach:

Ecola State Park is about a 10-minute drive from Cannon Beach, where you can find cozy lodging, charming restaurants, and additional photo spots. Cannon Beach’s famous Haystack Rock is also nearby—ideal for extending your photo session or enjoying a post-ceremony beach stroll.

Entry Fees & Parking:

The park has a $5 day-use fee per vehicle, and parking can fill up fast at popular spots like Indian Beach. Weekdays or early morning visits tend to be less crowded, giving you more privacy for your elopement.

Accessibility:

Some trails, especially after rainy weather, can be muddy or uneven. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, especially if your elopement includes hiking or off-path locations.

When to Elope at Ecola State Park

The Oregon coast is stunning year-round, but late spring to early fall generally offers the most reliable weather for eloping at Ecola State Park. Here’s a seasonal breakdown:

  • Spring: This season brings blooming wildflowers and vibrant green landscapes, but be prepared for rain and unpredictable weather.

  • Summer: Summer offers the warmest, most stable conditions, although the park can be busy. Early mornings and weekdays are best for a more intimate feel.

  • Fall: The park is quieter and has a romantic, misty charm, with fall colors adding to the forest’s beauty.

  • Winter: For adventurous couples, winter elopements bring dramatic, stormy skies and fewer crowds, but trails may be more challenging to navigate.

What to Know for a Smooth and Memorable Ecola Elopement

Nearby Accommodations and Dining:

Cannon Beach is filled with boutique hotels, rustic cabins, and charming local spots for a perfect post-elopement celebration. You can choose from oceanfront inns with views of Haystack Rock to secluded cabins nestled in the forest, adding a cozy touch to your getaway. For dinner, Newmans at 988 offers an intimate setting with French and Italian-inspired dishes crafted from Pacific Northwest ingredients, while The Wayfarer provides delicious seafood and ocean views.

End your night with a treat from Bruce’s Candy Kitchen or a handcrafted coffee from Insomnia Coffee Co. (truly some AHHHMAZING Coffee). The town’s mix of relaxation, coastal charm, and unforgettable dining makes it an ideal place to toast your new beginning.

Leave No Trace:

Protecting the natural beauty of Ecola is essential. Follow the Leave No Trace principles by respecting wildlife, taking out all trash, and sticking to trails to preserve the landscape for future visitors.
